The three active founders
“We are on the inside as much as on the outside a learning company. A team in which each and every person is constantly learning new things is incredibly fulfilling.”
Markus Witte, co-founder and CEO (Chief Executive Officer). Markus leads the company and is responsible for the following areas: Business management, marketing, and product development
Before Babbel, Markus was engaged on a managerial level in various positions at Native Instruments, a leading manufacturer of music software, where he shared responsibility for the development of online marketing and web infrastructure. Markus began his career in 1998 as a lecturer at New York University, following almost two years working as a research assistant at the Institute for Cultural Studies of the Humboldt University in Berlin. His special interest is media and communication development and the future of learning.
Markus Witte studied communication and cultural studies in Essen, Bremen and Berlin.
“For me, what makes Babbel so special is on the one hand an international team, which is committed to developing the best learning product, and on the other hand the certainty of working on a product that the world really needs.”
Thomas Holl, co-founder and CTO (Chief Technical Officer). Thomas leads the development and the operation of the platform.
Already during his studies in computer science Thomas co-founded his first company: The d-lusion interactive media GbR. Thomas developed music software like the first MP3 DJ tool, which, following its sale to Native Instruments GmbH, he further developed and optimized into the product “Traktor”. With his experience he supported the Accenture GmbH as a technical consultant for three years before he co-founded Babbel in Berlin in 2007.
Thomas Holl studied computer science at the University of Marburg and at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
“With Babbel we are breaking new ground every day. I love the challenge of developing a forward-looking learning system that motivates, stimulates and accompanies people in their learning process.”
Lorenz Heine, co-founder and CInO (Chief Innovation Officer). Lorenz is continually seeking and developing new opportunities for innovation.
Lorenz already gained experiences as an entrepreneur before Babbel: in 1997 he co- founded the music software company Native Instruments, and in addition to actioning the financing rounds as CFO, he also shared responsibility for the establishment of production and logistics. As a strategic creative driver of products he developed action plans and initiated, amongst other things, the acquisition of BATTERY and KONTAKT. At Babbel he brings with him his expertise in the development and refinement of online product concepts, as well as his intuition for new Internet trends.
Lorenz Heine studied Business Management at the TU in Berlin and electric guitar at the Musician Institute in London.
